Chapter Fourteen

The woman stared at the screen on her laptop and brought her fist down on the table, causing the mug to rattle and the milky, brown liquid to spill over. The words it’s complicated mocked her as she looked at Jasmine’s Facebook page. The status had changed in the last twenty-four hours, and she raged over the update.

She wasn’t sure whether she would be able to wait to visit Silver. The Fourth was a long way off, and there was no telling what might happen between now and then. Silver’s allure was difficult to ignore, even for a woman still grieving her dead wife.

She had to acknowledge there were clues leading her to believe that perhaps the grieving period was ending, and it was simply not acceptable in her estimation. She could not allow Jasmine and Silver to consummate their relationship. No, that would not do at all.

Hearing a bark outside brought her attention to the large, fluffy dog sniffing around. Dogs were loyal. Cats were not. No wonder Jasmine preferred cats. She wasn’t loyal and it was time for that to change. If she didn’t interject herself into the situation, the train would start down the tracks, and then she would never manage to stop it.

She picked up her phone and sent a quick text message. It was time to stop messing around. She was a woman of action who always prevailed in the end.

Jasmine was beaming. She decided to check Facebook and her personal email to see if Silver had sent a private message to her. So far, most of their communication had been through Facebook. She wondered if that would continue now that they had each other’s phone number.

On a whim, she had changed her status to it’s complicated. She’d always laughed at that option, but it certainly fit her current circumstances. Jasmine wasn’t sure why she’d done it, but she supposed she wanted to signal that something had changed without putting too much pressure on Silver. Her excitement over Silver’s confession got the better of her.

She smiled when she saw the friend request from Preston and quickly accepted. He would be fun to correspond with, and she’d find out how he found her Facebook account when she called him.

Jasmine was still on cloud nine when the first text pinged on her smartphone. She picked up the phone and glanced at the message. Silver had attached her flight arrangements with a quick note that she intended to make her own way back to the airport on Monday.

Her smile ended when the next text came through. It was almost as if her happy balloon suddenly lost all of its air. She dreaded responding to the message, but she’d promised.

Jasmine had a legitimate reason to limit her availability to during the week. That would make this coffee date easier on her. She could suggest a time on Tuesday or Wednesday and keep the conversation to fifteen minutes or less. She wasn’t sure how Dara would respond to that
